The earth templar is the fusion between the magics of Earth and martial prowess, which focuses primarily on physical strength and heavy, two-handed weapons. The earth templar is as much a warrior as he is a spellcaster, talented with an array of heavy weaponry and the gifted with the fortitude to soldier through many common wounds. Additionally, many of the protective spells of Earth supplement their defenses in combat, especially in melee combat.
Earth templar is one of the few classes in the game able to effectively wield a polearm. Although it is not as effective against magical damage as it is physical damage, it is not helpless against it.

Tips
Augmented strength allows for an earth templar to choose from heavier weapons than he normally would be able to wield as a member of his race. This opens particular flexibility for lower-strength characters, preventing the older limitation of not being able to use some weapons traditionally favored by the class (such as the lucern hammer). However, with the loss of brittleform, using weapons that deal bash damage is no longer a necessity for the highest damage output; they need only be two-handed for maximum utility.
With stabilize, bind weapon, giant strength, stone skin, mantle of earth, and durability, an earth templar has tools to counter many common combat tactics, making them surprisingly effective against mobiles and players alike. Their primary focus is against melee combat tactics, so they will find little help against sudden bursts of damage (such as from an imploding fire scholar).
Races with lower mental scores may find it difficult to maintain all of the self-buffs available to this class and still use their weapon skills, as those drain mana also. These races should definitely consider finding an earth scholar to shape their weapons to take advantage of their very high wield weight afforded by their racial strength and augmented strength. Ch'taren, racially, have particular advantage in their natural resistance to weapon damage stacking with stone skin (and thus duplicating the damage reduction of sanctuary versus physical damage types). However, races with higher strength and constitution scores will see more benefit from durability.
