Protection from lightning grants a large amount of resistance to lightning attacks, starting at 67 resistance when you get the spell, and increasing to 75 resistance at hero. The spell is basically required for air scholars that want to use chain lightning.

Items like the knotted wooden rings, and more exotic items help to increase your resistance a bit more. Two knotted rings will bring your resistance up to 82 resistance. The innate resistance of aelins to lightning makes the aelin race a good air scholar, although it is not enough to become completely protected from lightning with just the two knotted rings.
