Tank

To "tank" in a MUD or MMO game means being the one that is taking the hits from an enemy mob or player. A character that is a good tank is one that can avoid a lot of hits and/or absorb a lot of damage. The role of the tanking character is to prevent his or her groupmates (who are usually not as strong defensively) from being damaged.
